Vancouver Canucks fans may want to look away right now, as Brock Boeser has publicly stated he believes he will not be back with the team next season.
Brock Boeser does not anticipate returning to the Vancouver Canucks next season. The 27-year-old right winger, playing his ninth NHL season with the Canucks, will be an unrestricted free agent on July 1.
"Honestly, it's unlikely at this point," the forward told Sportsnet in a story posted Thursday. "It [stinks], it's unfortunate. I'm just trying to play good hockey, and then I'll worry about everything after that. We all know it's been a roller coaster of a year. There's been a lot of different things."
He's finishing a three-year, $19.95 million contract he signed in 2022. Boeser told Sportsnet that he will not be discussing his future with his agent, Ben Hankinson, until after the season. Boeser doesn't believe he will be back.
"Yeah, I'm refusing to talk to Hank right now," he said. "I feel like I'm playing a lot better hockey recently, and I don't want to get distracted. That's one of the things I've learned: When there's distractions, I don't play my best hockey. The mental aspect of the game is so important. This year, there's been a lot of distractions."
Boeser's production has taken a big dive compared to last season
This season, Boeser has 49 points (25 goals, 24 assists) in 71 games, following a career-high 40-goal, 73-point campaign in 2023-24.
He began the season on a good note with 11 points in his first 12 games before being concussed on a hit by Kings forward Tanner Jeannot on Nov. 11. Jeannot was suspended for three games, and Boeser missed seven before returning on Nov. 26.
The Canucks (36-29-13) were officially eliminated from playoff contention when the Wild beat the Sharks 8-7 in overtime on Wednesday.
Vancouver captured the Pacific Division crown last season but lost in the second round of the playoffs in seven games to Edmonton. They have missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons.
