The Dallas Stars and head coach Pete DeBoer just received devastating news regarding their top forward Roope Hintz.
What was supposed to be a routine trade deadline day ended in absolute disaster for the franchise. The celebration of adding depth pieces quickly turned sour.
Hintz suffered a severe upper-body injury that will force him out of action long-term. And the team confirmed the awful update right as the trade window slammed shut.
Losing your number one center at the start of March is a gut punch for any locker room. This entirely alters the trajectory of their push toward the postseason.
He was delivering a stellar campaign with 24 goals while logging over 18 minutes of ice time per night. His transition game and controlled entries are unmatched on this roster.
Replacing that type of offensive output internally is simply not a realistic expectation. Because the depth chart looks significantly weaker today than it did yesterday morning.
Management made moves earlier in the week thinking they were putting the final touches on a Stanley Cup contender.
Now the front office is left staring at a glaring weakness with no external options left. The transaction freeze means the current roster must solve this massive problem alone.
Dallas leans heavily on his relentless two-way play to shut down opposing top lines. His speed consistently backs off opposing defenders at the blue line.
Taking those heavy shifts away forces everyone else up a slot in the lineup. A massive adjustment is coming for the middle six forwards.
Changes coming following injury
Both the power play and the penalty kill will require a complete overhaul. They must immediately figure out who can handle those specialty minutes.
Veterans like Matt Duchene face immense pressure to carry the load. They need to turn back the clock and deliver big performances during this homestand.
Younger forwards must also elevate their crisp passing and execution to keep this offense humming. Dropping points during this upcoming stretch is not an option in a tight division.
The defensive structure will need to be flawless to compensate for the missing firepower. Winning ugly, low-scoring games might be their only path forward.
