The tragic, on-ice death of Adam Johnson during a game in Britain over the weekend seems to have sparked a huge online debate over whether there was intent or negligence behind the kick that cut his neck. One of his teammates with the Nottingham Panthers has had enough.
Westin Michaud says he was the closest to the incident on the bench when it happened Saturday and could see the whole thing. He insists Matt Petgrave, whose skate cut Johnson, is not to blame.
"I need to address something about the accident. We wholeheartedly stand with Matt Petgrave. The hate that Matt is receiving is terrible and completely uncalled for. I was at ice level on the bench closest to the accident, I saw both players moving fast.
The unintentional clip of the Panther player's leg by the Sheffield player caused the somersault. It's clear to me his actions were unintentional and anyone suggesting otherwise is mistaken. Let's come together and not spread unwarranted hate to someone who needs [our] support." Westin Michaud
Petgrave has had to take his social media accounts private since the incident due to backlash from members of the public who feel, for whatever reason, that this was no accident. Police are investigating, but have not yet made a ruling either way.
