It was a tough loss for Team Canada. For Jakub Lauko of the Boston Bruins, it was a great thing to see.
Canada took on Czechia during the quarter-finals at the World Juniors. The loser would be eliminated, while the winner would go on to the medal rounds. After being down 2-0 for a while, Canada tied the game at 2 to head into the third period. With just 11 seconds left in the game, Jakub Stancl scored the winner on a very unlucky bounce for Canada.
Luako, a native of Czechia, was clearly pleased with what he saw, and took a moment to chirp the young Canadians.
Lauko took part in three World Junior tournaments before coming to the NHL. He managed one fourth place finish with Czechia, as well as two seventh place finishes.
His comment brought about an equal mix of positive and negative responses.
This is the first time Canada has exited the tournament at the quarter-finals since 2019, and just its third time since 2000. On the other side, this is Czechia's third straight year advancing to the medal rounds after a bronze two years ago, and a silver at last year's tournament.
