Detroit Red Wings lock up a key member of their team to 3-year extension
While most teams were looking at the trade front, the Detroit Red Wings were busy trying to lock up one of their free agents. This morning the Red Wings announced they have locked up defenceman Jake Walman to a three-year contract extension with a cap hit of $3.4 MM AAV.
The 27 year old, was a pending UFA this summer. Walman has established himself as a top four defender since arriving in a trade from the St. Louis Blues as part of the Nick Leddy deal last year.
In 40 games played this season Walman has scored 5 goals and 10 points while averaging 18:54 in ice time. Walman is earing the trust of head coach Derek Lalonde seeing his average ice time rise compared to last season.
The Red Wings have just 12 players signed to one-way contracts for 2023-24, with a long list of pending UFAs. General Manager Steve Yzerman has roster flexibility and can start shaping the roster towards his vision.
