Edmonton Oilers discussing potential blockbuster trade after injury to Evander Kane
Edmonton Oilers winger Evander Kane is out long-term and has been placed on injured reserve. The Oilers will have to do without a top six winger for most of the season. As a result, the Oilers might be looking to replace Kane's scoring up front. Mike Johnson reports that Vladimir Tarasenko might be a good fit for the Oilers and the Oilers have discussed a potential deal for the scoring winger. Tarasenko is on the last year of his contract with St. Louis that pays him $7.5 million per season.
St Louis has not had a good start to the season and needs to make some decisions about their future. If they don't think Tarasenko is a part of their future and are not interested in signing him long-term, they would be wise to acquire assets for him. A few seasons ago, it was Tarasenko who requested a trade from St Louis. It is also noteworthy that Tarasenko has a no trade clause in his contract. So, he can choose where he gets traded too.
Adding a high skilled winger to Edmonton would make them a dangerous offensive team to play against. Edmonton does have some cap flexibility with Evander Kane on long-term injured reserve now. It seems Edmonton's biggest need is a defenseman or a goalie but watching Tarasenko in this offense would be intriguing. It's still early in the season though and St Louis needs a game plan of what direction they want to head in.
Are they trying to continue to repeat with the roster they have? Are they rebuilding? These are all decisions that might take some time to sort out. However once the trade deadline gets closer, look for rumors of Tarasenko continuing to persist.
