The Vancouver Canucks have some great young talent on their team, but they just haven't been able to take that next step in contending for and making the playoffs, now instead of one of their best players wanting to sign an extension as soon as he's able, he wants to see how next season plays out before he commits to the team.
Pettersson, 24, played in 80 games for the Canucks last season scoring 39 goals and adding 63 assists for a total of 102 points.
Slow playing his contract talks could be two fold 1) he actually doesn't want the distraction of negotiating in season and 2) if he can follow up his stellar play from last season with another good season, that would drive up his value even more meaning he would earn a lot more on his next deal.
We'll see how this continues to play out, but from a players prospective, this is the right move. If you're in the Vancouver front office however, you'd ideally want to get Pettersson signed sooner.
