One of the greatest defenders in Toronto Maple Leaf history just took a turn for the worse as continued his ongoing battle with ALS. According to SportExpressen, a Swedish publication, Borje Salming's battle with ALS continues, however, his health is rapidly declining.
Salming, 71, made an announcement on August 10th with the help of the Leafs, at which point he let his diagnosis be known.
Since then, he's lost some of his motor function, his ability to speak without assistance and life as he and his family knows it, is gone. Salming has an aggressive form of the disease which progresses very quickly and will not slow down. His wife Pia describes those feelings.
He was so depressed that he couldn't talk to me either. He would try to process this piece himself. We have always been super tight, me and Bojre and have always talked a lot to each other.
It's a sad time for the Salming family and the hockey world in general. Our thoughts are with the Salming and his family as they learn to navigate this new stark reality.
