Lou Lamoriello failed to sign Nazem Kadri, because of their cap situation and because the Islanders failed to account for other players as well.

The Islanders haven't had a busy off-season, despite the numerous rumors that they were in on Kadri. They may have been, but their failure to secure any big-name free agent is on Lamoriello.
As CapFriendly shows the Islanders currently have $11 million in cap space, it doesn't explain, how in all of this Lou punted on Kadri.
So who did Lou sign? Grant Hutton, Austin Czarnik, Otto Koivula, Sebastian Aho(not that one), Robin Salo, Andre Andreoff, Ruslan Ishakov and Ken Appleby.
For a team who is supposed to be in win-now mode, this seems more like a tank job. While it is smart for Lamiorello to secure their prospects, no matter how thin their pool currently is, the Islanders aren't set to win anything.
After everything, their window has closed and firing Barry Trotz was the first nail in that coffin. According to Elliotte Friedman the cost to move out salary was far too high for the Isles. After moving their last three 1st round picks for JG Pageau, Kyle Palmieri and Alex Romanov, the Islanders couldn't afford to pay the cost needed to move out money.
