Ryan McDonagh was lucky enough to capture two Stanley Cups as a member of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Unfortunately for McDonagh though the salary cap ultimately forced him out of Tampa. After yesterday's trade with Nashville many people wondered why exactly McDonagh accepted that deal.

The Predators made the playoffs, but didn't win a single game in their first round series. Truthfully missing the playoffs was probably the worst thing that could happen to the Predators. With their best player Filip Forsberg, an unrestricted free agent it seems like the Preds are in need of a new direction.
But today Nick Kypreos provided a little insight into how things went down. Kypreos took the time to reveal just how ruthless this salary cap has made teams.
So you mentioned the no trade. He had a no trade clause McDonagh. Yeah, kids, cups, no trade clause and they're just like bye. This salary cap is in this world of reality for these guys is that you give your heart and soul to Tampa Bay and they have to move you even with a no trade clause.

So, the way it was described to me was, we've got a couple of teams that are interested in you. And I, I don't think he was thrilled about going to Nashville at this point, probably, because of the things that we discussed, how really close are they, right? And he had some control with the no, no trade.

But the no trade isn't a no move and apparently that if he didn't agree to be traded, he was going to be waived and Tampa had a commitment from Columbus to claim him. And now it's you want to go to Columbus, or you want to go to Nashville.

This report gives a lot more insight to what went on behind the scenes and just how ruthless the salary cap has made teams.
