Insider reveals how much William Nylander's next contract will cost and it's going to be a problem

After a somewhat slow start to the season, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been on an absolute tear. With their record now being 25-9-7, many Leafs are having career seasons, most notably being William Nylander.

Nylander is producing at a career best rate, with 22 goals and 45 points in 41 games. He'll be on pace to have his first season producing over a point-per-game, and will be eligible a contract extension for next year. Now Darren Dreger is reporting that Nylander's contract could be comparable to Mitch Marner's in value.

At the moment, Marner is still out producing Nylander this year, and has had two 90+ point seasons in his career. However, with Nylander's recent production, and being an Unrestricted Free Agent, it's not out of the question Nylander could command $10M or more.

A contract to watch for a comparable this off-season will be that of Bruins' forward David Pastrnak. He was used as a comparable during Nylander's RFA negotiations, and will likely serve as one again this offseason. Pastrnak has had slightly better seasons recently in his career, so we could expect Nylander to sign just under Pastrnak's dollar value.

It'll be interesting to see if the Leafs can keep their core four forwards through their next set of contract negotiations. Just as it did in 2018, that process will once again begin with William Nylander.
