Kent Hughes, the Montreal Canadiens General Manager, held a media availability this morning and some interesting quotes came out of it, especially when it came to the trade deadline. Two major pieces that the Canadiens have to offer this year are defensemen Ben Chiarot and Jeff Petry.
Ben Chiarot is a steady defenseman with an expiring contract, which are always hot commodities at the trade deadline. He does however have a modified no trade clause but I'm guessing it only has contending teams on that list anyways. I think almost every team in playoff contention should be calling Kent Hughes with an offer.
Jeff Petry on the other hand may be a little harder to move. He is in the first year of a 4-year deal worth $6.25 million per season, with a modified no trade clause, and he is already 34 years old. Petry is a good right-handed puck moving defenseman and every team is always looking for one of those, but that's a lot of term and age. I think only a select few teams would be interested in bringing in Petry and they would need the cap space to do it.
