Earlier today, future Hall of Fame goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury was warned about wearing his special edition Native American Heritage helmet in with warmup or game action against the Colorado Avalanche yesterday. The National Hockey League warned both Fleury and the Minnesota Wild organization with hefty fines. After much consideration, Fleury decided to wear the mask inspired by his wife anyway.
Now, according to Michael Russo of The Athletic, it's very unlikely Fleury of the Wild will be fined for his action, something that would be considered defiant; take a look.
UPDATE: Rule be damned, Marc-Andre Fleury is wearing his Native American Heritage mask in warmups. I'm told it's very unlikely he or the #mnwild will be fined, but he's risking it
His mask is up to $5,600 in the auctionvastly more than any other item
This comes after the NHL doubled down saying there would be major fines if he broke their rule.
Listen, this was a garbage declaration to begin with, let players support causes how they want on an individual basis, but to threaten hefty fines and likely back out because you're scared isn't a good look either. Stick to your convictions and fine players that break league rules, or, take the asinine rules away.
All this proves is that the player can push Gary Bettman around. See Travis Dermott earlier this year as well.
Bettman is trying to ruin the game for the players off the ice as well, it's good to see they're fighting back and going against baseless and fundamentally wrong rules.
We'll see what happens, but if Bettman doesn't punish Fleury, his words mean nothing.
