Philadelphia Flyers make an extremely surprising cut from their roster
The Philadelphia Flyers are in new territory, with John Tortorella as head coach. Tortorella has been known as someone capable of turning a terrible team around, as he turned the Columbus Blue Jackets from losers, into a team that swept the Tampa Bay Lightning, and led to consistent playoff play during his time there.
Tortorella also promised to play his prospects, but this latest round of training camp cuts, says otherwise.
The Flyers cut Cam York, who has been determined to be a future NHLer, given his skill set. York's a definite two-way defenseman, who has enough skill to not only quarterback a power-play but make good passes and has a good slapshot.
With how much Torts loves the two-way style of play, this move is perplexing, given scouting report's on York.
Whether it's his slap shot, wrist shot or a pass attempt, York is more than capable of moving the puck where he wants it to go with decisiveness and emphasis.
That ability lends itself to York's power play potential as he's also primed to be the quarterback of an NHL squad's power-play unit one day given his skillset.
In 63 games last season, York scored 14 goals and 65 points while also adding a jaw-dropping 11 points (four goals) in just seven WJC games.
While York brings all of this and more offensively to his teams blue-line, he still lacks defensively and that could limit where he ultimately ends up in the 2019 Draft Class.
Tortorella blamed York's lack of mental prowess for sending him down to Lehigh Valley, to season up in the AHL.
All in all, given how much he preferred playing veterans in Columbus and left rookies to hang out to dry, like Emil Bemstrom and Liam Foudy, rather than develop them until recently Bemstrom's been stuck in the minors.
We'll see how this develops, while the Flyers tank for Connor Beddard.
