The game of hockey is like a family, you rely on your teammates on and off the ice and for high level players, including those in the National Hockey League, you see more of your team than you do your family in season. As such, the bond between teammates becomes extremely close. If something happens to one of your teammates, you want to honour them.
Recently, NHL forward Pierre-Luc Dubois sat down to speak to the Empty Netters Podcast about why he switched his jersey number to 80 when he was traded to Winnipeg, the reason is incredibly touching; take a look.
#LAKings Pierre-Luc Dubois talks about the reason he chose to change his number to #80.
«If I ever win the Stanley Cup, it would be my last name, but it'll be his number»
Dubois says he switched his number for his former teammate Matiss Kivlenieks who tragically passed away before the 2021-22 season.
Dubois did Kivlenieks family if he could were the number 80 before he switched. Not only does Dubois have Kivlenieks with him every time he takes the ice, but he also said that if he were to ever win a Stanley Cup it would Dubois's last name but Kivlenieks number.
This is such a heartwarming gesture to the Kivlenieks family and a great way to carry his legacy in hockey on.
