Referees call not one, but two rarely called penalties during the Seattle Kraken and Florida Panthers' game
The NHL has a long list of rules and most of which are commonly called, but every now and again you see a penalty called that you don't routinely see called. During Sunday's game between the Seattle Kraken and Florida Panthers, not once but twice did we see a penalty for playing the puck with a broken stick called. While this is a known rule, it's something that you don't always see called.
For example, when the Toronto Maple Leafs faced off against the Dallas Stars, Mitch Marner broke his stick and followed that up by intentionally placing his broken stick in a shooting lane. Sunday though both Jared McCann and Gustav Forsling saw penalties go against them for this exact penalty.
It's nice to see referees enforcing the rule book, but in both these cases it seems like neither player was aware their sticks had broken. Of all the things the league needs to enforce this is probably not the most important rule they could be focused on.
