As the early July NHL draft approaches, teams and media are finalizing their scouting reports on this year's class of players. One name surprising everyone to be falling in recent months was the originally projected first overall pick, Shane Wright.
With 32 goals and 94 points in 63 games this season, Wright has had a solid season for the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL. However, elite NHL players in the OHL have previously produced much higher than his rate, leading some scouts to doubt if he has the high-end skill to warrant this first overall pick. Wright only finished 8th in OHL scoring this year.
The Athletic's lead scout reported yesterday that Wright has fallen from the first overall slot, now occupied by the Slovak forward, Juraj Slafkovsky.
With Montreal owning the first overall pick and hosting the draft this year, it will be extremely interesting to see who they select. With the first overall slot now divided amongst NHL scouts, it could be a franchise defining moment for the Habs to hit or miss on the draft to begin what seems to be a long rebuild.
