The reported ask from Campbell's camp is a 3 year deal worth north of $5,000,000 a season. Toronto have just under $8,000,000 in cap space to work with. GM Kyle Dubas has RFAs to deal with in Timothy Liljegren, Rasmus Sandin, Pierre Engvall, and Ondrej Kase. They also have UFAs in Ilya Mikheyev, Colin Blackwell, and Iyla Lyubushkin.
There is only so much space availble. Toronto already has Peter Mrazek and his $3,800,000 cap hit for the next two seasons. With the Cap situation they are in it would be hard to see them commit close to $9,000,000bb per season in their goaltending tandem.
Rumours have Dubas working the phones to get Mrazek's contract off the books but with his terrible season and injury history it will be a tough sell.
Campbell made 47 starts a career-high. Posting a 31-9-6 record with a 2.64 goals per game and compiled a 0.914 save percentage. It was a tale of two seasons for Soup. His October and November numbers worth Vezina nomination worthy but his game really fell off after he returned from his groin injury. His January, and February numbers weren't NHL starter quality. He showed glimpses the rest of the way but couldn't replicate his early season form.
The chances of the Leafs bring back Soup are getting slimmer and slimmer.
