The worst NHL contracts for 2023-2024
Every National Hockey League season there is a scenario where someone in their infinite wisdom releases a list of the worst contracts on a team's books that at the time a General Manager believed would be a good idea and hope would pan out, this offseason is no different as presented by Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic.
The top ten worst contracts are:
1. Seth Jones, Chicago Blackhawks (7 x $9.5 million)
2. Colton Parayko, St Louis Blues (7 x $6.5 million)
3. Jonathan Huberdeau, Calgary Flames (8 x $10.5 million)
4. Tyler Seguin, Dallas Stars (4 x $9.9 million)
5. Marc-Edouard Vlasic, San Jose Sharks (3 x $7.0 million)
6. Brayden Schenn, St Louis Blues (5 x $6.5 million)
7. Travis Sanheim, Philadelphia Flyers (8 x 6.3 million)
8. Ryan Strome, Anaheim Ducks (4 x $5.0 million)
9. Darnell Nurse, Edmonton Oilers (7 x $9.3 million)
10. Nicklas Backstrom (Washington Capitals (2 x $9.2 million)
Honourable mentions include Brendan Gallagher (Montreal Canadiens), Josh Anderson (Montreal Canadiens), Drew Doughty (Los Angeles Kings), Ben Chiarot (Detroit Red Wings) & Torey Krug (St Louis Blues). There is a theme that is apparent as the St. Louis Blues and Montreal Canadiens have multiple players on the list and franchises that have struggled for success recently are littered throughout.
General Managers have a tough job and are hard-pressed when it comes to offering a fair deal that is right for the player and the franchise, but it is clear, if they create a bad contract, they could be tied up in money or terms for an awful long time. This has more often than not cost a General Manager their job.
