There are bound to be plenty of mixed emotions on this one. International rap star Drake has placed a massive bet on the Edmonton Oilers to defeat the Florida Panthers in the 2024 Stanley Cup Final, leaving some worried about the notorious "Drake Curse."
Drake took to his Instagram account to show bets he made on both the NHL and NBA finals. He bet $500,000 on the Oilers, and another $500,000 on the Dallas Mavericks.
"Dallas cause I'm a Texan. Oilers are self explanatory. Picks are in @stake."
The Drake Curse stems from when the rapper served as the Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors in 2013. The team suffered huge heartbreaks for five straight seasons, before finally winning the NBA title. Drake also placed a $700,000 bet on UFC fighter Sean Strickland earlier this year, with Strickland losing to Dricus Du Plessis. Another $1.2 million bet was placed on YouTuber Jake Paul to defeat Tommy Fury in a boxing match on 2023. Paul Lost.
"The only things certain in life are death, taxes and Drake's curse."
Should the Oilers manage to avoid the curse, Drake would win around $1.2 million. If both Edmonton and Dallas win their respective league titles, Drake's winnings would be approximately $2.4 million.
It appears the Edmonton Oilers have at least one other celebrity fan routing for them against the Florida Panthers. Saturday Night Live alumni Tim Meadows recently posted a video to his Instagram account declaring his love for the Oilers.
The 2024 Stanley Cup Final between the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers gets underway Saturday night in Miami.
