Elliotte Friedman’s Carter Hart update puts new pressure on Vegas crease decision

Carter Hart is back in the Vegas conversation, and Bruce Cassidy suddenly has a goalie storyline that won't go away.
That's because Elliotte Friedman put real weight behind the chatter in his latest reporting.
“Vegas is notoriously private about injuries but there is expectation Carter Hart will return before the end of the regular season.” Friedman stated
That line matters. Not because it guarantees anything, but because it pushes this from background noise to something the rest of the league is now watching closely.
Hart has been out since early January with a lower-body injury, and Vegas has had to ride through that stretch without a clear update timeline. For a club trying to lock down its spot, that kind of uncertainty always hangs over the room.
In the meantime, Adin Hill and Akira Schmid have handled the crease. They've kept Vegas afloat, which is why Hart's possible return feels less like a simple activation and more like a decision with real playoff consequences.
There's also no hiding the numbers from Hart's season. In 12 starts, he went 5-3-3 with a 3.28 goals-against average and a .871 save percentage.
Maybe that's why Friedman's wording stands out so much right now. He didn't frame this as a long shot or a distant possibility. He framed it like something Vegas expects to happen.
Vegas may be nearing a real crease decision
Friday added another layer when video showed Hart practicing at T-Mobile Arena with goalie coach Sean Burke and shooters. That's not the kind of sighting that cools down speculation. It fuels it.
Take a look:
And if Hart does get back before the schedule closes, Cassidy has to decide what kind of runway to give him. A quick tune-up is one thing. Handing meaningful starts back to a goalie still trying to find rhythm is another.
That's what makes this more than a health update. It's a coaching decision waiting to happen, and those are the calls that can shift a room fast at this time of year.
There's also the outside noise. Hart's return would bring another wave of attention because he was one of the five players acquitted of sexual assault charges tied to an alleged June 2018 incident in London, Ontario.
So Friedman's quote lands on two levels. It points to a possible return, and it warns that Vegas may be approaching a far more complicated decision than just picking its next starter.
For now, the message is simple: this isn't idle chatter anymore. When Friedman says expectation, the hockey world listens.
