Former first round pick Christian Fischer announced his abrupt retirement from the NHL after becoming a free agent this summer.

With NHL free agency taking place, and the offseason in full swing, there are going to be several names who are going to be leaving the NHL to either pursue other ventures in Europe, North America, or elsewhere there is professional hockey.
However we've also seen a fair share of retirements this season as well. T.J. Oshie, Nick Bonino, and Matt Martin have all hung up the skates in recent weeks, with the latter two transitioning into coaching and executive roles respectively.
We can add another to the list now, as former Arizona Coyotes draft pick and nine-year veteran Christian Fischer has announced his retirement from the NHL.
It comes at a time where Fischer was an unrestricted free agent, and while he certainly could have found a role somewhere, decided it was best for him to start a life outside of hockey.
Drafted 32nd overall in 2015, Fischer skated in 523 games and recorded 137 points (62G, 75A) and recorded seven points last season in 46 games.
The main reasons for his early retirement include wanting to spend time with his family, and also pursuing some business outside of the hockey world, where a lucrative opportunity awaits.
Probably in the last year or two, I've really thought about just kind of what I want to do with my life and what makes me happy and spending time with my friends and family.

I know if I were to play another five or six years, I could do that when I'm 34, 35, I understand that. It's what makes me happy and it's what I want to do, and I've got a great business opportunity to pursue and be around my family more and just basically move on that way.

It is typically unusual to see a player retire so early from the NHL, especially when injuries don't factor into the equation. But for Fischer, who hit over 500 NHL games has already lived a career he could have only dreamt about:
If you told me that when I was 10 years old, 'You're going to play 500 games in the NHL,' I would be the happiest kid you've ever seen.
