Longtime NHLer and Beloved Hockey Night in Canada Broadcaster Passes Away
The hockey world has sadly been thrust into mourning with the news of today's tragic passing of former NHL player and broadcaster Greg Millen.
We in the hockey world have tragically
lost another one of our own today, as former NHL goaltender and Hockey Night in Canada broadcaster Greg Millen has passed away at the age of 67.
The somber news was confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) by the NHL Alumni.
It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today. He played 14 seasons between the pipes in the National Hockey League for six teams: the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. Over his NHL career, Millen appeared in more than 600 regular-season games.
Millen is survived by his wife and 4 children; right now, his cause of death hasn't been released.
Millen played over 600 NHL games
He was taken 102nd overall in the 1977 NHL Amateur Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. He later played for the Hartford Whalers and emerged as their starter, beating out John Garrett for the position.
Eventually, he was traded to the St. Louis Blues in the trade that sent Mike Liut to Hartford. His NHL career also included stops with the Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and Detroit Red Wings.
He went 215-284-89 with a 3.87 GAA and a .873 SV%.
Not long after his playing career ended, he delved into the world of broadcasting as a colour commentator for the expansion Ottawa Senators in 1992; he later joined Hockey Night in Canada.
Eventually, he became the lead colour commentator alongside Joe Bowen for Toronto Maple Leafs game broadcasts.
