Alex Ovechkin made history over the weekend, and while he's passed Wayne Gretzky, that doesn't mean he's going to slow down anytime soon.
This season has been all about Alex Ovechkin's chase for Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal scoring record, and on Sunday, he did just that, notching his 895th career goal to pass The Great One.
However, Ovi is still under contract for next season, and at minimum, that gives him 85 games (assuming he's healthy) to go tally some more, with many wondering just how far he can ultimately go.
Now, NHL Analyst Aaron Krolnek has made a shock prediction, revealing that while 900 is all but a guarantee, he believes that Ovi could eventually end up getting 1,000.
"I think he can get to 900 this year, for sure, they've got what five games left. And then they search for a thousand. Can he get to a 1000 is next for Ovechkin. I think it's the answer is yes. If he plays that much, it's all about if he wants to, of course he can do it. There's no - I think he can score 50 again next year. Why not? Who would deny this."
That would mean another 105 goals for Ovechkin in his career, and with the 39-year old scoring at a 0.69 goals per game pace in 2024/25, there's a chance that in two years he could certainly get there.
We've all heard the rumblings that Ovechkin could look to wrap up his hockey career in the KHL, and with his contract up at the end of the 2025/26 campaign, his ability to get to 1,000 would rely solely on whether he has another year in him, but at 39-years of age, it would take another incredible few years for him to get there, so it may even be out of reach for The Great 8.
