It was a post-game moment for the ages, as Alex Ovechkin called his entire team out to salute Marc-Andre Fleury, who has now had a priceless reaction to it all.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin made sure his team returned to the ice Thursday night to give Wild goalie Marc-Andre Fleury the proper send-off at center ice in Minnesota.
Even though the Caps lost 4-2, Ovechkin was not about to miss the chance to shake hands with 'Flower,' who will be retiring at the conclusion of the season.
This was likely the final time Ovi and 'Flower' shared the ice together
With this likely to be their final time sharing the ice together, Ovechkin set the tone and hugged Fleury and laughed first, followed by the rest of the Capitals, then participating in the send-off.
Friday evening, Fleury reflected back on the moment with his own signature smile, noting how lucky he was to have played against such a tremendous player. Of course, he couldn't resist adding a little bit of a friendly jab at his old archenemy.
"You know, I always loved to hate Ovi, just because we had so many battles. With the Penguins, you know, a few playoff series. Even throughout the season too, him and Sid, it was always a big deal. It was always a big game.
"I feel very lucky and fortunate I got to play so many games against him, compete against him. He's obviously a tough opponent I'm glad he came and I could say something to him and how he had such a tremendous career."
- Marc-Andre Fleury
Now in his 21st and presumably final NHL season, Fleury sat as backup during the game, as Ovechkin attempted to close in on Wayne Gretzky's all-time goal record.
Ovechkin and the two have battled many times, particularly when Fleury played for the Penguins for 13 years. Ovechkin has struck 28 goals against him in 47 games, the most he has struck against any netminder.
Legends recognize legends, and this was no exception. What a moment that will be etched in history forever.
