Hockey players get paid a lot of money to play the game, with that comes a fair amount of criticism based on performance, but no player should be forced off of social media due to brutal, hateful comments directed towards them after a bad game.

Yesterday, the New York Islanders played the New York Rangers outdoors in what was a captivating game from start to finish with the Rangers winning 6-5 in overtime.

To say Islanders fans were disappointed is an understatement, but some took to social media to absolutely tear into defender Scott Mayfield because he had a rough game and was in and out of the penalty box at key moments.

Like I said, it's okay to be frustrated at a player for a bad game, but the Smokey of hate Scott Mayfield has received isn't right.

Sometimes fans seem to forget that hockey players hear what is said about them and with the amount of abhorrent posts about him, Mayfield has decided to leave social media

No matter what happens on the ice, hockey players should still be recognized as people who hear and face an unreal amount of critics as is. Fans don't need to add on to that, especially the way they piled on Mayfield here.
