NHL gives John Tortorella a MASSIVE punishment after his ejection
Saturday night the Philadelphia Flyers faced off against the Tampa Bay Lightning in an Eastern Conference matchup. Both teams are trying to make a final push for the playoffs, tempers were at a boiling point. It took less than 12 minutes for Philadelphia Flyers head coach John Tortorella to be ejected from the game.
This ejection was unique because after being told to leave the bench Torts refused. Eventually, after an extended discussion cooler tempers finally prevailed and Tortorella went to the locker room. At the time the Flyers were already down four to zero and Torts was particularly unhappy with a call from everyone's least favored official. Wes McCauley.
Now the NHL has announced that Tortorella has not been fined, but instead has been suspended.
Hearing John Tortorella has been suspended two games.
One thing I'd like to say: I really believe this is a case where we should hear from the officials. I don't think it benefits anyone including the referees in this case that we can't hear what happened here.
Bettman has made it clear that he will not tolerate any criticism of his officials. Even if that criticism is justified. Just another example of the best refs in the world.
Update: Tortorella has also been fined $50,000
