The national anthems before NHL games have caused plenty of drama this season, but according to a top insider, things aren't going to change as a result with the league making a final decision on potential changes.
Reportedly, Gary Bettman completely shut down that idea, and now, Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that the leagues stance moving forward will be that nothing is going to change.
"Obviously there's booing going on right now. I heard the league just said 'We're just going to keep the status quo.'"
"There have been times it's happened before and their history has always been just status quo, and that is what they are going to do."
This isn't a surprising decision given that this would have drawn plenty of backlash, as Friedman reveals that during his time with CBC, changing their philosophy on the anthems drew plenty of backlash from fans.
"I remember at CBC there was a time we went away from showing the anthems and we got a lot of viewer complaints, to the point that we made it policy that we were going back to do it. That was what we did at the time and the NHL has the same belief."
The tensions between the two nations have brought on plenty of drama, especially at the Four Nations, and while the NHL could look to change the way things are doing moving forward, as of right now they believe it's easier to simply do nothing, and ultimately, they could be right.
