Insider links former first-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers
Between trading Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets, as well as actively shopping Carter Hart and taking calls on Scott Laughton, Philadelphia Flyers general manager Danny Briere is very busy and has no signs of slowing down.
During his most recent trade board article on The Athletic, TSN's Pierre LeBrun linked Philadelphia Flyers forward Travis Konecny to the Edmonton Oilers, as well as the Carolina Hurricanes.
"Konecny would be a great, top-six pickup for a contender. Edmonton and Carolina make sense as suitors." LeBrun said.
Kurt Leavins, a reporter for the Edmonton Journal, says that his source has informed him that the Oilers have reached out to Danny Briere and the Flyers regarding Konecny's availability.
"And a contact of mine with connections to the player reports that the Oilers are one of the teams that has reached out to ask about Travis Konecny. There is lots to like about the speedy, versatile, competitive forward with lots of finish. Konecny has just one year left after this season on a relatively economical $5.5m cap hit, and the London, Ontario native would probably not be averse to signing long-term North of the border. Konecny would be a true Top-6 prize for Edmonton. We shall see if there is any fire from that bit of smoke." Leavins said. Konecny, 25, was selected in the first-round (24th overall) by the Flyers in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The London native tied his career-high in points with 61, but put up the most goals in any of his seven NHL seasons thus far, scoring 31 times in 60 games.
As Leavins mentions, Konency is one year away from being an unrestricted free agent. If the Flyers are unable to reach an extension with Konecny this summer, there's a very good chance that Danny Briere would like to move him before next season's trade deadline rather than letting him walk for nothing in July 2024.
