The Boston Bruins shocked the NHL by trading captain Brad Marchand, and it's safe to say that the move absolutely shocked veteran blue liner Charlie McAvoy.
Not only did it shock people outside the organization, but it came out of nowhere for many of Marchand's teammates, with injured defenseman Charlie McAvoy now opening up on the trade.
«There's another aspect to this game that has nothing to do with on the ice, and that's the friendships of it and the relationships and the reality of it. Been here a while now. I've seen a lot of my friends no longer here."
In his time with Boston, he's seen players like Patrice Bergeron, Zdano Chara and so many others come and go, but to lose your current captain to a major rival via trade is a major shock, and McAvoy notes that it certainly still stings.
"It's a problem everyone goes through, not just me. But it stings. It does. All those guys, you wish nothing but the best for them. They're very easy to cheer for. Every one of them. Every guy that we lost.»
McAvoy made his heartbreak known fairly soon after the deal however when he posted on social media with broken heart emojis, showing that he still has plenty of love for his former captain.
Ultimately, this is the business of the NHL, and whether it sucks or not, it will continue to happen like this as long as the league is around, but that doesn't make it any easier for players like McAvoy or David Pastrnak.
