Chicago Blackhawks ownership reportedly purchasing junior hockey team
According to Scott Powers of The Athletic, the Chicago Blackhawks ownership group are making a major addition to their portfolio. Wirtz Corporation is reportedly purchasing the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League.
"Wirtz Corporation is purchasing the Chicago Steel of the USHL, a source familiar with negotiations confirmed to The Athletic on Saturday. The source asked to speak anonymously because the deal has yet to be finalized." Powers said.
The Steel were founded in 2000 after relocating from Fargo-Moorhead and have gone on to win two Clark Cup championships in 2017 and 2021. Their organization has produced some current young NHL talent including 2021 first-overall pick Owen Power, 2023 third-overall pick Adam Fantilli and Montreal Canadiens forward Sean Farrell.
Their purchase of the Chicago Steel franchise comes less than a week after the passing of Blackhawks owner Rocky Wirtz at the age of 70.
