Montreal Canadiens show interest in Winnipeg Jets prospect Rutger McGroarty
The Montreal Canadiens had the fortune of drafting right winger Ivan Demidov with the fifth overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft and although GM Kent Hughes appeared to be ecstatic with the pick when speaking to Sportsnets Elliotte Friedman after the selection, it is believed they had talked with or at least considered a trade with the Winnipeg Jets to acquire Rutger McGroarty who is unhappy with the direction the Jets have him trajecting towards and would like a change of scenery.
McGroarty who just completed his second season at the University of Michigan finished the thirty-six game season contributing with 16 goals along with 36 assists for 52 points and six penalty minutes believes he's ready for the next level in his development and that would mean a jump to the National Hockey League by any means necessary.
While the Canadiens are high on Demidov and were happy that he was available, it is unknown how serious talks about McGroarty were.
There is a possibility that the Jets could still move on from McGroarty during day 2 of the draft but we're going to be in a wait-and-see pattern if and when that occurs.
