Matthew Knies isn't coming to Montreal, leaving head coach Martin St. Louis to search for answers on their mystery target.

The noise surrounding a potential blockbuster deal reached a fever pitch this week. Fans and pundits alike expected a massive splash from the organization.
Insider David Pagnotta poured cold water on the entire narrative during his latest podcast appearance. He completely dismantled the mainstream rumors. It just leads to more confusion for the fans, who have no idea what to think about the Canadiens' strategy.
He confirmed the Canadiens were never actually close to landing Knies before the trade deadline expired. The young Toronto forward is staying right where he is.
General Manager Kent Hughes worked the phones relentlessly until the final buzzer on Friday. He openly admitted to pushing hard for a major roster addition.
The proposed trade was labeled a significant deal internally, but the framework collapsed at the absolute last minute. Negotiations hit a wall.
The popular names floating around the rumor mill simply don't match reality. The hockey world has this situation entirely wrong.

The true target remains unknown

Pagnotta also firmly shut down the persistent St. Louis Blues connection that dominated the headlines.
Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas were heavily linked to Montreal all winter. Both dynamic forwards seemed like obvious fits for a team looking to increase their offensive output.
Neither of those guys were the mystery player Hughes tried to acquire. The front office clearly had their sights set on a completely different high-end asset.
The Canadiens already have 36 wins this season. They sit comfortably in the playoff race and are proving they can compete without making a panic move.
Adding a young power forward with 51 points like Knies would have immediately boosted the top six. Crisp passing and a heavy forecheck are always welcome down the stretch.
Instead, management decided to stand pat. They chose to trust the current locker room to execute the system and secure a postseason berth.
Hughes openly stated he plans to revisit this massive file when the summer trading period opens. The groundwork for a massive swap is already laid out.
For now, the identity of the player who almost packed his bags for the Bell Centre is securely locked in the vault. The anticipation will only build as the offseason approaches.
