Nashville opting not to sign former 3rd overall pick, will become UFA on July 1st
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, the Nashville Predators will not be issuing a contract to former third overall pick Alex Galchenyuk after acquiring him from the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Galchenyuk will now hit the open market on July 1st as an unrestricted free agent.
The 29-year-old was dealt to Nashville in exchange for Ryan Johansen, who had 50% of his contract retained by the Predators. Adding Galchenyuk allowed the Predators to dump 50% of Johansen's salary without having to take anything of significance back and opened up a roster spot.
Galchenyuk signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche in November after recovering from an injury he suffered in training camp with them while on a professional try-out contract.
In 11 games for the Avalanche, the Milwaukee native had no points, four penalty minutes and was a minus-eight. Galchenyuk spent the majority of the 2022-23 season with the AHL's Colorado Eagles where he was a point-per-game player, tallying 42 points in 42 games.
