The New York Rangers are a mess right now, but according to franchise legend Mark Messier, there's a way for them to be able to fix things moving forward.
Despite winning the President's Trophy a year ago, the New York Rangers have completely fallen apart in 2024/25, and after some big trades, poor development and terrible coaching, their future suddenly looks incredibly bleak.
Now, franchise legend Mark Messier has addressed the situation, and while he's in no position of power with the organization, he has detailed a five step plan to turn things around moving forward.
1. Identify a leader/captain
2. Create an identity
3. Define a nucleus to drive culture
4. Push youth into important roles
5. Replace the bad body language
First an foremost on this list is replacing the captain, as the team have been without one since trading
Jacob Trouba, and with veterans like
Mika Zibanejad and
Chris Kreider struggling and potentially on the way out, there's some limited options.
The likes of
Adam Fox,
Vincent Trocheck and
J.T. Miller are all options, and given how bad the culture has gotten, the naming of the next captain is perhaps the first and most important step here.
On top of that, the steps won't be easy, with Messier stating that the team need to define their culture, identity and replace their bad body language, all of which can potentially be done with a few good signings and the departure of Head Coach Peter Laviolette, which is expected.
Ultimately, it's very easy to say this on paper, but to actually accomplish all of these steps and potentially do it all in one summer is much easier said than done, but if the Rangers can accomplish one or two with a new captain and a new coach, with time, there's a chance that this team can turn things around moving forward.
