NHL Department of Player Safety announces supplemental discipline for John Tavares
Early in the 3rd period of last night's game, John Tavares placed himself in front of the Edmonton Oilers net, a place he frequented last night. Rookie defender Vincent Desharnais tried to clear Tavares, but was unsuccessful. Desharnais then delivered multiple cross checks to the back of Tavares.
Tavares then took matters into his own hands. After noting no penalty was being called, Tavares turned around and instead two-hand slashed Desharnais directly in the hand/wrist.
On the play the referee issued penalties to both Tavares and Desharnais. But today the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that Tavares would receive a penalty for his actions.
Toronto's John Tavares has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for Slashing Edmonton's Vincent Desharnais.
This fine aligns with the punishment received by Ryan Hartman received last week for a similar act.
