Toronto Maple Leafs make final decision on Ilya Samsonov
For an NHL general manager like Brad Treliving sometimes you were forced to make a difficult decision. After nearly three months of struggling, the Maple Leafs have made the decision to finally pull the plug on Ilya Samsonov. Today the Maple Leafs placed the veteran goaltender on waivers.
This season Samsonov currently sits 59th out of 60 goalies in save percentage. On multiple occasions he has shared the details of his mental struggles. This is just another example of the fallout putting a goaltender through arbitration can have. After going through the process it is been clear Samsonov has been unable to find his game.
Maple Leafs will likely recall Dennis Hildeby from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. This marks the first difficult decision that Treliving has had to make since taking over as general manager.
Samsonov is in the final year of a one-year contract paying him 3.55 million per season.
The Buffalo Sabres also placed Eric Comrie on waivers today.
