Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been involved in some rumors as of late, and on Saturday, Elliotte Friedman offered what the truth really is.
Auston Matthews is the face of the Toronto Maple Leafs' franchise, and there is no denying that some fans are currently worried about his commitment to the team.
Over the course of the season, the Leafs have found themselves down in the depths of the Atlantic Division, and it feels unlikely that they will make the postseason.
Having said that, there are now talks of a potential rebuild. Naturally, Matthews' name has been brought up as someone who could be traded to kickstart a rebuild.
This is mostly fantasy, and for the most part, the Leafs have shown no interest in doing this. However, fans have been worried that Auston might jump ship if the Leafs become sellers at the deadline
Elliotte Friedman gives the latest on Auston Matthews
On Saturday, Elliotte Friedman was on Sportsnet, where he offered up an update on the Matthews situation and his relationship with the Maple Leafs.
The insider revealed that Matthews sat down with the team's front office. The Leafs were quick to ask the captain what his plans were for the upcoming season.
As it turns out, Matthews wants to stay. He is committed to the Leafs franchise, and the Leafs franchise remains committed to him.
If you are a fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs, then this is certainly good news. The last thing you want to see is Matthews leaving for somewhere else.
Having said that, there is no denying that the Maple Leafs need to start winning. If they can't become contenders in the next two seasons, Matthews could change his mind.
It is something that is going to be in the back of Brad Treliving's head as the Olympic Break officially begins for the Leafs on Tuesday night.
