Craig Berube's update on Oliver Ekman-Larsson is going to concern Leafs fans

Last night's loss to the Detroit Red Wings was particularly concerning for the Toronto Maple Leafs, as there was more than just a loss of points.

It also led to an injury to defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who has quickly become one of the most important players on the entire team.

Overall, OEL has been sensational this season, and there is no denying that the team has been propped up by his play as of late.

A long-term injury would be absolutely devastating for the Maple Leafs. In fact, OEL missing just one game would be awful. That's why fans were waiting for Craig Berube's update after the game.

Unfortunately, the news was not great. After the game, Berube made it abundantly clear that the defenseman still needs to be evaluated.

What we do know is that the injury is to the lower body. Whether or not that translates into anything long-term remains to be seen.

Ultimately, the Maple Leafs are going to have to hope that they are able to figure all of this out going forward; otherwise, this season is over.

They aren't winning enough games to make the postseason, and the constant stream of injuries certainly isn't helping their case.

At the end of the day, only the healthy teams can survive, and the Maple Leafs have been the complete opposite of that all season long.

Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs can get over the hump, and prove to everyone that they have what it takes to make it far.
