Toronto Maple Leafs star William Nylander is currently dealing with an injury, and there has been some discourse about whether or not he should be playing for Sweden.
William Nylander has been dealing with injuries this season, particularly when it comes to his groin. Quite frankly, this is new territory for the forward, as he is known for being an iron man of sorts.
Going into the Winter Olympics, Nylander is not letting his injuries affect his ability to play for Team Sweden. This is his first time at the Olympic Games, and as you can imagine, he is excited to represent his country.
Unfortunately, things took a bit of a dramatic turn on Tuesday when it was revealed that Nylander was not participating in Sweden's morning practice.
Following the practice, there were reports that Nylander could very well miss Sweden's first game on Wednesday against Italy. However, there was also some optimism that Nylander could turn a corner.
William Nylander injury update
This morning, Sweden was back on the ice as part of their game-day skate. Miraculously, Nylander was on the ice, and he was looking pretty good out there.
However, the team is refusing to say whether or not Nylander will play later today. Instead, the entire lineup is being made a mystery. The same can be said of the starting goaltenders.
Maple Leafs fans will certainly be watching Team Sweden closely throughout the tournament. The same can be said of Team USA, which boasts the talents of Auston Matthews.
Both Matthews and Nylander have dealt with injury problems this season, which has made their Olympic participation that much more controversial.
If Nylander and Matthews come back home with injuries, then there is a chance that they both get shut down for the remainder of the NHL regular season.
Should that be the case, there will be a lot of angry Leafs fans, and many of them will rush to blame the players for their ego and pride. For now, fans just need to be patient, and just be happy that NHL stars are back at the Olympic games.
