St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn was dangled around in trade rumors last season, and the Toronto Maple Leafs were one of many teams interested.
Last season, there was no hiding the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs were a bit desperate for some depth down the middle, in the form of a center.
In the end, the Maple Leafs got themselves Scott Laughton, although there were many better players available, albeit at an exorbitant price.
One of those guys was none other than Brayden Schenn of the St. Louis Blues. Unfortunately, for the Leafs, Schenn was unwilling to waive his no-trade clause.
However, there was one way the Leafs could have acquired the forward, at least, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman.
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs trade for Brayden Schenn?
At the time, the Maple Leafs were keen on acquiring defenseman Luke Schenn. Friedman believes that had they done this, Brayden Schenn would have hopped on board.
Toronto was trying to get Brayden Schenn last year; I'm not convinced Schenn would have said yes anyway, I think the only way he would have said yes is if [they] got Luke too
It is tough to say whether or not this is true. After all, trades are hard, and had the Leafs acquired Luke Schenn, there is no guarantee they would have had assets left for the brother.
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs are not in a position to trade themselves out of their current funk, which is going to be a tough pill to swallow for Leafs fans.
Having said that, things are going to be very interesting over the coming days and even weeks. Hopefully, the Leafs are able to figure it all out.
Tomorrow night, the Leafs will actually play Brayden Schenn, which is a unique bit of irony in all of this.
