The hockey world is in mourning today, as the Toronto Maple Leafs announced the passing of former goaltender Marc Laforest at the age of 62.
There is sad news out of the world of professional hockey today, as the Toronto Maple Leafs have
announced the passing of former goaltender Mark Laforest at the age of 62.
We are saddened to learn that former Leafs goalie Mark Laforest (affectionately known as «Trees») has passed away.
Mark appeared in 27 games for the Maple Leafs during the 1989-90 season and after his retirement, appeared at many NHL alumni events.
Never drafted, Laforest played with the Detroit Red Wings, Philadelphia Flyers, Ottawa Senators, and Maple Leafs.
He finished his NHL career with a record of 25-54-4.
Mark Laforest was once involved in an infamous brawl against the Philadelphia Flyers
Laforest took part in one of the better-known goalie fights in NHL history against Sean Burke of the Philadelphia Flyers on Oct. 23, 1989 at Maple Leafs Gardens.
At that point, I wanted to get thrown out of the game anyway. We're down 5-2, it was my first home start and I figured people would at least remember me for something good. I was exhausted and had to have a cigarette later in the dressing room. Over the years, I began to think I'd done okay against Burke, but then they invented YouTube and everyone could see I didn't.
He also looked back affectionately at his time playing with the Leafs.
«I loved my time with the Leafs. I'd watched Hockey Night In Canada every Saturday, even though I was a Chicago fan as a kid (and Tony Esposito in particular). Every game at the Gardens, my dad or mom or someone from the family was there.
