Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi was a healthy scratch on Friday against the Washington Capitals, and he received a challenge from Craig Berube.
In case you haven't noticed, Max Domi has not been good this year. He has just six points in 23 games, and can't find a role on the team.
He has played center and wing, and neither position has worked out for him. He has played on the first line and the fourth line, and still, his production suffers.
On Friday night, Domi was a healthy scratch against the Washington Capitals. Unfortunately, this wasn't even enough to help the Leafs win.
The Leafs lost yet another game, and now, it is uncertain whether or not Domi will slot into the lineup come Saturday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Craig Berube wants more out of Max Domi
However, we now know what Domi is going to have to do to get his head coach back on his side moving forward.
While speaking to the media, head coach Craig Berube made it crystal clear that Domi needs to get in the dirty areas and start playing with more passion.
It's just getting engaged more in the game. He's got to get dirty down low in the O-zone, win battles, and get more engaged that way. And get to the inside of the ice more.... When he's skating and moving, he's an effective player. But it's too inconsistent.
It's a good message, and one that is long overdue for Domi, who is very clearly struggling with his role, or lack thereof on the team right now.
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs have had to make a ton of hard decisions as of late, and if Domi cannot get it together, then a trade might be necessary.
Overall, this is going to be an interesting next few weeks, as many players have their career in the balance right about now.
