Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews and defenseman Chris Tanev got injured on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings, and now, the team is in trouble.
Injuries have been a huge problem for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, and it does not appear as though the situation is going to get any better anytime soon.
According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Auston Matthews and Chris Tanev are likely going to be out tonight against the New Jersey Devils.
Matthews blocked a shot on Sunday and was in some pain. Meanwhile, Tanev could be out a while after suffering an injury that was not related to his concussions.
In fact, Toronto Marlies players have been told not to travel to Cleveland today as they are currently on standby for a potential call-up.
It was subsequently confirmed that Dakota Joshua and Tanev are ruled out for tonight. Meanwhile, Auston Matthews is going to be a game-time decision.
In preparation for tonight, the Leafs have called up Matt Benning and Jacob Quillan. Clearly, they are feeling the heat and need to make some roster moves.
This is bad timing for the Maple Leafs, who remain five points out of a playoff spot, and don't seem to be in a good position while in last place in the Atlantic Division.
What's next for the Toronto Maple Leafs?
For now, the Maple Leafs can only take things one game at a time from here on out. They cannot get too concerned with the injuries. They just have to keep marching forward.
William Nylander could be out tonight against the Devils as well, which will send shivers down the spines of Leafs fans everywhere. Again, now is not the time to panic.
The Leafs will just have to roll with the punches here and hope that they can come through with a big performance that gets them those important two points.
