Maple Leafs given an ultimatum concerning defenseman Brandon Carlo

Brandon Carlo is a defenseman who has elicited a bit of controversy for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the years, thanks to his up-and-down play.

Overall, the Leafs gave up a lot to get Carlo. They gave up Fraser Minten as well as a top-five protected pick to the Boston Bruins.

Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is feeling the consequences of that move, and there are some fans out there who are still upset with the general manager.

Having said that, the fans are eager to see what the trade deadline is going to bring, especially with Carlo's name mentioned among those who could be let go.

According to James Mirtle and Chris Johnston of The Athletic, there is very much a world in which the Leafs end up trading Carlo.

In a new report, it was revealed that his trade value is high. However, there is an ultimatum here. His value is only high if the Leafs retain some salary.

This is the issue with trading defenseman who make more than $3 million per season and don't score very many points.

If the Leafs were to trade Morgan Rielly, they would have a similar issue. At the end of the day, Treliving is going to have to worry about taking some losses when it comes to the salaries of his players.

Quite frankly, this is something that a lot of fans saw coming. There are numerous Leafs players who could be dealt, and there is no telling what the plan is going forward.

If one thing is for certain right now, is that we do not envy the position that Treliving has been placed in.
