Following the firing of Brendan Shanahan, MLSE CEO Keith Pelly has been looking for a new President of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and he may have just found him.
During the Summer, MLSE CEO Keith Pelley made one of his biggest decisions thus far as the head of the Maple Leafs' ownership group.
He decided to let go of President Brendan Shanahan, who had been with the team for over a decade. While Shanahan wasn't explicitly fired, ownership opted not to renew his contract, which is ultimately the same thing.
Since that time, the Leafs have gone without a team President. Instead, the front office mostly consists of just general manager Brad Treliving, who is struggling to field a competitive hockey team.
The Leafs need some new blood. Someone who has a track record of building winning teams that can perform when the lights are brightest. As it turns out, that guy may have just become available.
Toronto Maple Leafs can set their sights on Jim Nill
The man in question is Jim Nill, the general manager of the Dallas Stars. His contract expires at the end of this season, and depending on what he decides, he might just become a free agent.
Leafs fans are looking at Nill as a potential savior for this franchise, and it is easy to see why the man would elicit so much reverence from the fanbase.
If you have paid attention to the Dallas Stars over the last five or six years, you would realize that this team is always in a position to compete for a Stanley Cup.
They make the Western Conference Finals frequently, and they also made the Cup Finals back in 2020. Not to mention, they aren't afraid to swing for the fences on guys like Mikko Rantanen.
Bringing in Jim Nill could give the Leafs the outside-the-box thinking they need to start doing some real damage in the Eastern Conference.
Of course, a lot can change between now and the end of the season. Nill could easily decide to stay in Dallas and crush the dreams of the Leafs' hopefuls. But for now, he remains someone who should be on Jim Nill's radar.
