William Nylander Almost Missed Game 6 After an Egregious Error From Craig Berube
Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander almost missed tonight's Game 6 against the Ottawa Senators due to an error from head coach Craig Berube.
William Nylander had a goal in Game 6 that was very important in securing a two-goal lead early on. Even though the Senators eventually tied the game, the Swedish star's goal was a big one.
However, the forward almost didn't get to play tonight and it is all for the silliest of reasons. In fact, this would have been a National embarrassment.
It all started earlier this week when the Leafs called up 14 players from the Toronto Marlies, including Willy's brother, Alex Nylander.
William Nylander almost replaced by Alex Nylander
Prior to tonight's game, Craig Berube and the Toronto Maple Leafs coaching staff submitted their lineup sheet to the officials and the NHL.
However, instead of putting William Nylander on the sheet, they put Alex Nylander. As Elliotte Friedman explains, had the referees not caught this in warmup, William Nylander could have been told to leave the game.
That said, if the officials are kind, they can give the offending team an opportunity to correct the record. That is exactly what they did here.
As it stands, the Toronto Maple Leafs are up 3-2 in this game and there is no telling if they can hold the lead with about four minutes to go.
Max Pacioretty scored the go-ahead goal after being taken off of the second line. The Leafs now need to put on a defensive clinic.
Meanwhile, William Nylander will be motivated to get a second goal so that he can put this game away for good.
It has been a difficult series for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and fans just want this to be over, once and for all.
