Utah HC owner Ryan smith just announced a surprise deal for fans that could help grow the team's brand quickly.
The Utah Hockey Club have had mixed success this season. The team is 30-27-11 through 68 games, giving them 71 points, four shy of the second wild-card spot.
The team was largely quiet at the trade deadline due to their position in the standings, but they have proven to be good enough to squeak in if they get hot at the right time.
Either way though, the playoffs were not necessarily the primary goal of the organization this season.
Since it is their first year in Utah, the club was instead been focused on building a fanbase and growing their brand.
This is exactly why the team has kept their fans included in the process of finalizing their new name.
Today, team owner Ryan Smith, who also owns the Utah Jazz, made another announcement that should hep grow the team's brand and fanbase.
He revealed that the team is launching their own streaming service called UtahHC+ and it will cost just a single dollar for fans to watch the remaining 14 regular season games on the team's schedule as well as any potential first-round playoff games.
This makes watching the team much more accessible to fans, especially in a day and age where streaming services have become exorbitantly expensive.
Utah appears to be following a model set by the Dallas Stars with their Victory plus network, which gives fans in Texas access to the team's games for free.
Hopefully we will see more teams take this approach in the coming years as the NHL looks to continue to grow and become more accessible to fans regardless of their income level.
