It finally happened. The great one's record has been broken by the great eight.
Alex Ovechkin has surpassed
Wayne Gretzky to take sole possession of the record for most career goals with number 895 today on Long Island.
That being said, fans who paid the exorbitant cost to get in certainly had their wishes come true as they got to witness NHL history in person.
The Islanders were not so happy about the moment though, and that was made obvious by how the team's social media reacted to the historic moment.
In a post on X, the team simply noted that Washington scored and that it was 2-1 Islanders in the middle frame.
They did not specify who scored the goal, nor did they congratulate Ovechkin on his historic accomplishment.
Understandably, fans were not particularly happy about this.
One fan commented how the team was reacting as if it was just a regular goal and not one of the biggest moments in NHL history.
Others taunted the team's page, asking who scored the goal in the replies.
One fan even went so far as to say they were thankful Ovi scored early in the game so they wouldn't have to watch the Islanders for a full 60 minutes.
The Islanders take a 3-1 lead into the third period in the game so while Ovechkin may have achieved his personal goal, it seems as though his team may very well drop the contest, which would be a rather anti-climactic ending for such a historic game.
