At this year's NHL trade deadline, despite being one of the top teams in the league, the Boston Bruins were looking to add depth to their roster. The Bruins elected to do that by adding multi-time Stanley Cup winner, Patrick Maroon to their roster. The only problem with the addition was earlier this year, Maroon underwent back surgery to repair a nagging issue.
In recent years it was clear that Maroon was battling through injury as he'd slowed down substantially and looked to be a step behind at almost all times on the ice. The hopes are that the surgery would be enough to help his extend his NHL career. But like every surgery comes with it risks and despite a good prognosis the Bruins were unsure if the forward would be able to play again this year.
While it is still not definite that Maroon will be able to play by the end of the season, this does go a long way. Adding a player with his intangibles could provide the Bruins with exactly what they need to advance in this year's playoffs. After last year's disappointing exit, Boston is looking to do everything in their power to avoid the same fate.
